5.1 Annotated Screenshots - Conventions
Within our opening sequence we have tried to challenge the conventions of the genre by focusing more the ways in which independent films construct their film and challenge conventions. As we focused more on independent films we found that these types of films are not specifically associated with a particular genre and instead focus more on the character development and themes such as realism. An example of this within the film industry would be Kids as it does not fit a specific genre but instead puts across a strong message related within the real world at that time. We wanted to get across the message that even though these characters fit the general stereotypes of teenagers within modern society with the way they dress and the label of 'chav' which they get brandished with by sections of society, it does not mean they all act in that way. We have also tried to supported the conventions of possibly the crime genre due to building the characters up to give this type of image and message across to the audience through their clothings and actions. However using the voice-overs to explain to the audience the troubles they face with their idiosyncrasy's, we have tried to make the audience think more in depth about the film and not make it blatantly obvious for them to identify conventions, linking back to the idea of independent films with no genre. They will then have to reflect and really think about the messages we are trying to portray and think deeper to find out more about them and not label them all with the same image. The screenshots below are just some examples of how we've tried to challenge conventions through the clothing of each character and the elements of realism in opening sequences through the awkward silence at the end and the focus of more about the character development as a whole.
5.2 Annotated Screenshots - Social Groups
In our opening sequence our media products represents the social group of teenagers and more specifically teenage boys. What we tried to create in our opening sequence is a real focus on the teenage stereotypes and how they are portrayed within modern society. Some of the stereotypes which teenagers within society today get labelled with included lazy, rebellious and ill-behaved. We put these stereotypes across to the audience mainly by the clothing of each character and how it represented the "chav" stereotype which teenagers get branned with in today's modern society. The three characters would be referred to as a 'Triad' which is a group consisting of three people. A triad does not tend to be as cohesive and personal as a dyad which only consists of 2 people. However with the use of the over voices we felt we could make the audience relate to each individual character more. The word "Triad" is also associated massively with organised crime globally, linking with the message we're trying to put across to the audience with the teenage stereotypes we will show, but then challenge. We then tried to challenge the stereotypes by allowing the audience to sympathise and grow with the characters due to each of the troubles that each individual character has to endure and hopefully will over come. By doing this it shows the audience that people should not be judged by the way the dress and people should not have an over simplified image of a person or group based on the actions of a small minority within the group. It also helps challenge the stereotypes by allowing the audience to see the development of the characters and how that their past may be the reason to why they find themselves in the situation they are in.
